The Ultimate Guide to Capturing Precious Newborn Moments with Relaxed and Cozy At-Home Photography

I am so thrilled for you. Bringing your baby home for the first time (whether from the hospital/birthing unit or during your homebirth) is one of the most special (and sometimes exhausting) times of your life. Hopefully you're reading this before bubs is born, but this guide gives you a rundown on what to expect when you have your newborn photographer turn up at your house. This is my style, and please check in with your own photographer if you want to check anything out.

I have seen some absolutely stunning studio shoots, and they are an incredible option, but the thing I love about at-home photography is that it is relaxed, at your pace, your other kids can lose it (yes that is normal), and you can then go prepare them a snack. When you need to feed, you can do it in the comfort of your own home, and if you get any body fluids on your outfit (yes that can also happen), you can get changed straight away.

You may want some beautiful newborn images, or you may just want a lifestyle session where you get to hang out with bubs, and the beauty of this, is that you can have either/or, or both. Usually I don't have a plan when I turn up. I adapt. We work in with when your baby is sleeping, feeding or awake, how siblings are coping, and what your house is like to see how we photograph.

Why Choose an At-Home Newborn Photography Session?

Creating a Comfortable Environment

One of the primary reasons to opt for an at-home newborn photography session is the comfort it provides. Your home is a familiar and comforting place for your newborn (and for you), which can lead to more relaxed and natural photographs. This sense of security often results in those heartwarming smiles and candid expressions that you'll cherish forever.

Personalized Settings

At-home sessions allow for a personalized touch. You can choose backgrounds, props, and settings that reflect your family's personality and style. This level of customization sets your newborn photos apart and resonates with viewers on a personal level.

Convenience

Traveling with a newborn can be challenging. By having me come to your home, you eliminate the stress of packing everything up and heading to a studio. This convenience factor is not only practical but also ensures that your baby stays comfortable and content throughout the session.

Preparing for Your At-Home Newborn Photography Session

Timing Is Key

Newborns are often at their sleepiest and most cooperative during the first two weeks of life. Schedule your session accordingly to capture those adorable, peaceful moments. Ideally 5-10 days is the perfect time, so please let me know shortly after you've had baby, so we we can try get your time confirmed in that window.

Create a Cozy Environment

Before I arrive, make sure your home is warm and cozy. I'm generally sweating by the end! But keeping a warm environment makes baby that much more sleepy and helps us change them and move them without too much disruption. Don't worry about trying to time their sleep before I arrive. Whether they're on you, in their bassinet, or feeding, all is entirely fine. We will time what we do around how they are going. You may find I put on some soothing white noise sounds (rain/ocean etc) to keep noise levels consistent while we move bubs around.

What to Expect During the Session

Patience Is a Virtue

Newborns can be unpredictable, and that's perfectly normal. Be prepared to take breaks for feeding, changing, and soothing your baby. I usually find a session takes around 90 minutes, but sometimes this can be faster, and sometimes it can take up to 2 hours.

Hang around

I know this goes without saying, but the whole point of capturing these moments, is capturing them with you. Even if I'm doing some 'solo' bubs photography, I love having Mum's or Dad's hands on baby, whether being photographed, or just patting and shushing. Let the siblings stay home from school or kindy at least for some of it, so we capture those moments between them, and you as a whole family.

Capturing the Magic

During the session, I will move around, capturing a range of precious moments. From tiny fingers and toes to adorable yawns and smiles (and the tears), these images will become cherished memories. But every session will be different, as every home is different, every baby is different, and every family is different. Please let me know if there is something you absolutely want captured.

Props

While my setup is basic, I have a range of wraps, headbands, little hats, and some backdrops. You will find me looking for the light, and I may often set up on the floor in your living room, on a bed, or in a hallway. I may even drape you with a blanket to provide a backdrop, while still keeping baby in your arms. You do not have to prepare a thing (other than the nappies and wipes that you'll no doubt already have). If you want to have something special photographed (ie. a special teddy or blanket), then please have this out and let me know when I arrive.

In conclusion, opting for a relaxed and cozy at-home newborn photography session is a decision you won't regret. It offers comfort, personalization, and convenience while allowing you to capture the most precious moments of your baby's early days.

Ideally, please get in touch before bub's due date so I have you on my radar, but don't hesitate to get in touch if you've already had baby, or if they are older. Older babies can make for some adorable photos!
